Heavy Rain and Snowfall Disrupt Daily Life Across Northern Pakistan

Severe weather has gripped Pakistan’s northern regions, with heavy rain and snowfall bringing daily life to a standstill across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide alert warning of rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in northern regions, with elevated areas expected to experience significant snowfall. Districts in Gilgit-Baltistan — including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Diamer — are among the worst affected, with conditions raising concerns about landslides and potential glacial lake outburst floods.

Roads across the upper regions have been blocked, key highways disrupted, and tourists stranded in multiple locations. In Murree, up to 12 inches of snow have been recorded, with further snowfall expected. Naran recorded six inches of snow, while areas such as Nathia Gali, Ayubia, and Changla Gali received up to four feet.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, heavy snowfall and landslides in Chilas and Upper Kohistan forced the closure of the Karakoram Highway at several points, leaving hundreds of passengers and cargo vehicles stranded and disrupting the supply of essential goods.

Power lines were damaged in several areas, affecting communication networks, and school holidays were announced in parts of the region. Rescue teams from 1122, district administration, and police have been placed on high alert, with snow-clearing operations using heavy machinery already underway.

The NDMA has warned that strong winds, lightning, and hail may damage weak structures, trees, and power lines, while continuous rainfall in hilly regions increases the risk of landslides. Tourists and travelers heading to northern areas are urged to check weather and road conditions before setting out.

Despite the hardships, farmers have welcomed the precipitation after a prolonged dry spell, noting that the rain and snow will benefit wheat crops in a critical growth stage and help recharge streams, springs, and underground water reserves that have been declining in recent years.

Authorities have instructed the public to limit travel and take necessary safety precautions, while provincial and district officials have been directed to remain on high alert.
