Govt Increases Rs. 200 Per Litre Hike on High-Octane Fuel

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a major levy increase on high-octane petrol, targeting luxury vehicle owners while promising relief for everyday Pakistanis.

The decision, made during a video-link meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, raises the existing levy on high-octane fuel by Rs. 200 per litre — pushing the total levy from Rs. 100 to Rs. 300 per litre. As a result, high-octane petrol is now expected to cost upwards of Rs. 530 per litre. Since this fuel grade is not government-regulated, prices may vary across regions and fuel stations.

Who Uses High-Octane Fuel?

High-octane petrol is primarily consumed by premium and luxury vehicles, placing it firmly in the domain of Pakistan’s wealthiest drivers. The Prime Minister stressed that it was only fair to increase the financial burden on this segment of society, rather than those who rely on standard fuel for daily commuting and livelihoods.

Where Will the Money Go?

The government says the revised levy is expected to generate approximately Rs. 9 billion in monthly savings. These funds are to be redirected as public relief — though specific details on distribution mechanisms are yet to be announced.

What Won’t Change?

Authorities were quick to clarify that the price hike is strictly limited to high-octane fuel. Petrol and diesel used by lower- and middle-income groups will remain unchanged. Public transport fares and air travel costs are also unaffected by this revision.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other senior officials.
