The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has granted taxpayers additional breathing room by extending the income tax return filing deadline to October 31, 2025.

The deadline for Tax Year 2025 returns has seen multiple adjustments:
- Original deadline: September 30, 2025
- First extension: October 15, 2025 (via Circular No. 4 of 2025-26)
- Latest extension: October 31, 2025
Why the Extension?
The FBR’s decision comes after persistent appeals from trade associations and tax professionals who highlighted several challenges:
- Delays in obtaining financial documentation
- Technical issues with the IRIS e-filing portal
- Complications in integrating Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems with FBR infrastructure
Despite initial resistance from officials who warned of penalties for late submissions, mounting pressure led the FBR to reconsider. The extension is being authorized under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.
Filing Statistics Show Growth
Tax compliance has shown positive momentum this fiscal year. From July through October 15:
- 5.06 million returns filed (current year)
- 4.60 million returns filed (same period last year)
- 7.6 million total returns filed in 2024-25
