UN Warns Iran Nears Nuclear Bomb Capability
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned that Iran is dangerously close to developing a nuclear weapon. In a Le Monde interview, Grossi noted Iran is rapidly nearing the technical capability to produce a nuclear bomb, though not yet fully capable, ahead of his Tehran visit.
Iran’s Nuclear Progress
Grossi described Iran’s nuclear capabilities as a “jigsaw puzzle” nearly complete, with many components already in place. While Iran has some distance to go, Grossi cautioned it is “not far off,” amplifying global concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Call for Verification
Grossi stressed that verbal assurances from Tehran are insufficient. He urged rigorous verification mechanisms, stating, “It’s not enough to tell the international community ‘we don’t have nuclear weapons’ for them to believe you.”
Escalation Since 2018
Since the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018 under Trump, Iran has accelerated uranium enrichment. Despite Tehran’s claims of peaceful intentions, the intensified enrichment has alarmed Western nations and strained diplomatic efforts.
Iran’s Firm Stance
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that uranium enrichment is non-negotiable. While open to addressing concerns, he stated, “The issue of enrichment is non-negotiable,” reinforcing Iran’s resolute position.
Diplomatic Efforts Intensify
Grossi’s Tehran visit coincides with heightened diplomacy, including upcoming Iran-U.S. talks in Rome. Prior Oman negotiations were constructive, with Iran’s Supreme Leader noting positive progress. Iran has also engaged Russia separately, signaling a broader diplomatic approach.
U.S. Opposition
U.S. officials, including former President Trump, vehemently oppose Iran’s potential nuclear weapon development. Trump called Iran’s regime “radicalized” and reiterated that it must not acquire nuclear arms.
Upcoming Talks
The Rome discussions will focus on technical safeguards and verification to ensure Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful. The outcome will significantly influence Iran’s nuclear trajectory and global efforts to curb proliferation risks.
