In an ambitious move to enhance its public transportation system, the Sindh government has greenlit the acquisition of an array of new buses for Karachi, including innovative electric and iconic double-decker models. The initiative was revealed by Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon during a press briefing.
During the conference, Memon disclosed that alongside updating the bus fleet, the cabinet is pushing forward plans to automate anti-narcotics operations to increase enforcement effectiveness. He noted that although the Prime Minister had pledged to provide 180 electric buses for the city, the necessary funds for these vehicles have yet to be allocated.
In a bid to boost women’s mobility and empowerment, the Sindh administration has introduced an innovative scheme to distribute free pink e-scooters to women who possess a two-wheeler license. Furthermore, the government will hold a monthly lottery to gift electric bikes to qualified women, encompassing students and professionals. To support women new to riding, the program includes training sessions conducted by female instructors.
The policy mandates that the beneficiaries of the electric bikes are not allowed to sell them for a period of seven years, ensuring the assets are utilized long-term.
Concerns had been raised about the design of the new buses; however, both Memon and the Chief Minister, who are trained engineers, addressed these issues. Their input was taken into consideration, leading to the approval of a design that adheres to strict safety and operational guidelines.
This progressive initiative marks a significant step forward in revolutionizing Karachi’s transport landscape, emphasizing sustainable travel solutions while prioritizing the independence and safety of women.
